Through our capoeira classes, individuals develop awareness and control of their body and emotions, deepen their musicality, and develop their capacity for play. This is embodied in the capoeira roda, where each person contributes positive energy to the group through song, music, movement, and presence.
Music energizes and directs the movement in capoeira. We teach music in an accessible way that encourages beginners to jump right in with simple instruments and still challenges more advanced students with complex rhythms, leading songs (in Portuguese!), and making their own instruments.
Each class may include: group warm-up, fundamental movement practice, partnered sequences, exercises in strategy, training self-expression and creativity, dynamic games, strength training, and roda.
All classes are appropriate for absolute beginners.
Through translation of songs and explorations of the many styles and traditions, we offer perspective on the rich Afro-Brazilian history of capoeira as an art of the oppressed within the frame of our present society.
We combine all of these elements in the spirit of growth and respect, and cultivate a community that loves to play together.
Adults, Instructor Bicicleta Monday and Wednesday 5:30pm-7:00pm All ages and abilities
These dynamic classes are the rice and beans of our practice. Each class incorporates a balance of mindfulness, cardio, coordination and flexibility, creativity and connection, and always ends with a roda to raise the energy and apply what we’re practicing. Instructor Bicicleta’s passion for music, playful expression, and complex sequencing of movements engages students through their body and soul. Training often with other capoeira instructors, Bicicleta brings new material, songs, and methods of instruction to weave into our practice. He gives individualized attention and directions for growth to each student, whether in their first class or a fellow instructor of many years. Any questions email [email protected]

Those with more experience can expect to be engaged with new material as well as continually practice the basics and assist newer students and the instructor. Capoeira Conditioning, Instructor Ligeirinho Thursdays 5:00pm-6:30pm All ages and abilities
The Capoeira conditioning class is to help gain the strength and stamina you want and need for capoeira. The class incorporates what was taught throughout the week to help further train the techniques and sequences. The class usually consists of core exercises and calisthenic exercises. The strength training is based on capoeira movements, therefore we use body weight to build the muscles for specific capoeira moves or positions. The class uses some of the philosophies of High Intensity Interval Training and support for our cardiovascular exercises to keep our heart rates up and build our strength. We always have a roda at the end of class to fill the space with energy, or as we say, Axé!
Roda Class,Instructor Bicicleta Saturdays 12:00pm-1:30pm All ages and abilities
Capoeira’s fullest expression is in the roda– playing capoeira in a circle of people singing and making music. This class devotes most of its time to the roda so everybody can have a chance to play with multiple people and apply their learning from the week. This class also offers the opportunity to ask questions and the space for student-led workshopping. Like all our classes, this class welcomes absolute beginners enthusiastically and is crucial to every student's training. In the warmer months we often meet outside at Pulaski Park.
